President’s Day, Presidents’ Day or Presidents Day? Nobody seems to agree on which one is correct, but then, they all may be. Let’s see.
Way back when, the US of A had a federal holiday on February 22 to celebrate George Washington’s birthday (February 22, 1732), and the date was known as President’s Day or George Washington Day.
However, Abraham Lincoln was also born in February -- Feb. 12, 1809 to be exact. So there also used to be a state holiday on February 12 to celebrate his birthday.
These were too many holidays in one month, so the dates were consolidated with the passing of the 1968 Uniform Holidays Bill, officially taking effect in 1971. The new holiday takes place on the third Monday of February, and is said to honor George Washington (President’s Day), or Washington and Lincoln together (Presidents’ Day), or simply all Presidents of this amazing country (Presidents Day).
Regardless of the particular choice of term, on this day we honor and remember those patriotic men and this great nation. Purple hearts are bestowed, Boy Scouts of America hold several celebrations, thousands attend mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City in honor of George, and afterwards, all over America, people rush to shopping malls to take advantage of Presidents Day sales.
